Broadcast P.S. for all Update message replies:
I'm sorry to announce that after over 8 years of publishing the
International EchoList, I am quitting and shutting it down.
As a direct result of threats from Bob Germer at 8:950/10, I cannot
continue to publish the EchoList as the open, uncensored advertising
medium for moderators it was intended, without becoming embroiled in
lengthy litigation.
If I establish the precedent of editing and censoring entries, current
legal opinions are that I take personal responsibility for the
contents of all the entries that do get published. That would be an
even more litigious position. On top of which, 300-400 updates per
month make my personally reviewing and editing the entire list
time-prohibitive.
Mr. Germer is clearly the last straw, but there have been and continue to
be more and more individuals like him and his detractors making FidoNet a
depressing cesspool of ego clashes and childish competitiveness. I am
happy that the vast majority of net riders don't see this nonsense and are
able to gain value from the net. But it just isn't worth the time,
trouble and potential expense to me to be in a position of perceived
"authority" in the organized anarchy we call FidoNet.
Bruce Bodger (Z1EC) is going to address methods to provide for efficient
maintenance of the Zone 1 Backbone list he publishes, and modify
those policies which pointed at The EchoList as an information
resource.
I expect the June edition (which will be published late) to be my
last. I will continue to accept and process MOD UPD messages
received here until I turn the database over to Bob Satti (Z1C) for his
disposition.
It's unfortunate that things have gone this way, but it was only a
matter of time. FidoNet, by not creating a formal organization and
management structure, and refusing to implement truely moderated
conference technologies, is loosely controlled anarchy. And while
the freedom is fun, the payback's a bitch.
Maybe when I retire someday I'll have the time to really edit and
publish something of value again. Until then, I'm glad to have been
able to help so many people find valuable resources for so many
years.
